Meet Jay Mckenny – the Level Cuts – a barber, a men's hair stylist and an educator from the UK and a member of the Booksy family. Find out what he says about his profession and the Booksy app.
I have been in the barbering and hairdressing industry for 25 years this November. I started my training at 14 with a Sicilian barber who guided me with theory and live models. I left there at 19 and pursued a career in creative barbering and ladies advanced cutting. I grew up in a design influenced household and that was the springboard for my career. In my time on the tools I have achieved some great high points, owned a great salon, gained sponsors and become an educator. It's been a great career.
Creative freedom and self-discipline, creating confidence in people, teaching, inspiring people and having a varied and wonderful client list.
Not wholy, it's barmy to suggest that with many years of experience we are not professional. Barbering can easily be a hobby that can lead to a career, I've seen that many times teaching. The term 'lifestyle' that I see loosely used is created by years of service, commanding your work pattern and therefore becoming the 'lifestyle' you create.
Both, if you reach the point where your expertise gains newer clients then I guess it's easier to create new looks as a blank canvas with an open minded client, but then again the more discerning client will provoke a nice balance to work with them to gain a comfortable suitable style.
Over 2 decades I’ve seen trends go in full circle, they come and go over the years, one thing that never changes is tailored style. I see trendsetters in the industry that's all.
My mentor in my early years, he showed me the difference between basic and tailored, how to treat hair as a fabric to create shape and weightlessness, insuring a manageable haircuts for your client.
Standing still, being disciplined and studying constantly. Learn your craft, understand your strengths and be the best at that, better to be the master of one than average at it all.
Fundamentally, it's allowed clients to manage themselves around my busy client list, and importantly it’s streamlined my day ensuring better service levels.
Wholeheartedly.
In a heartbeat.<
