Nail art has become an important form of expression in the Black community. How do you think nails represent cultural identity?
Nail art is a powerful form of self-expression. Growing up, I watched my mom and aunts express themselves through their nails, no matter their profession. For many in the Black community, nails have been a canvas for creativity and resistance, reflecting individuality, tradition, and even political messages. Our nails tell stories. Whether it's long acrylics with bold designs, intricate hand-painted artwork, or vibrant colors inspired by our heritage, every choice speaks to our culture.
What are some of the most meaningful designs you’ve created, and what cultural significance do they hold?
The most meaningful designs I’ve done weren’t just about art; they were about giving back. My mortuary manicures for grieving families hold an unmatched significance. It’s about ensuring that people are honored in their final moments with dignity and beauty. I’ve also had the privilege of creating nails inspired by African prints, Pan-African colors, and designs that reflect personal journeys. Every nail design is an opportunity to make a statement about where we come from and what we stand for.
How do you ensure that your salon is a safe and welcoming space for the Black community?
It requires intentionality—being properly trained in Black beauty needs, having the right staff, and creating an environment where clients feel valued and seen. I make sure that my salon is not just a place to get your nails done, but a space to celebrate Black beauty in all its forms. From playing music that resonates with our culture to employing staff who understand and uplift our clients, everything is designed to make people feel at home.
How do you feel about the rise of Black-owned nail salons and their impact on the community?
I’m genuinely excited. Black nail techs have been underrepresented for so long, so it’s inspiring to see us creating our own spaces. These salons offer great services and a sense of belonging and authenticity. For too long, the beauty industry has overlooked Black talent in the nail space. Now, we’re reclaiming it. We’re setting trends, building businesses, and showing the next generation what’s possible.
Why is it important for Black people to have access to nail professionals who understand their unique beauty needs?
It’s about trust, cultural understanding, and self-care. A Black nail tech understands specific challenges related to our skin tones, textures, and nail types, making the experience more inclusive and empowering. This also affects how we are treated as clients. When we go to a Black-owned nail salon, we don’t have to worry about being judged for our choices or feeling like an outsider. We are at home.
How do you use your work to empower Black clients?
I make sure my salon is a place where my clients feel supported. Whether through affirmations, uplifting words, or just listening, I want them to leave feeling confident and proud of who they are. I also mentor young Black nail techs, showing them the business side of things and helping them build sustainable careers in beauty. It’s not just about nails—it’s about economic empowerment, self-worth, and representation.
What is the significance of Black-owned esthetic businesses in the beauty industry?
They bring relatability and understanding, crafting solutions specifically for melanin-rich skin. It’s about redefining beauty standards and celebrating our unique identities. There’s a level of care that comes with working with someone who understands your skin, your history, and your needs. When I started, there weren’t many Black men in esthetics, so I knew I had to be that representation for others.
How has the esthetics industry evolved in terms of inclusivity for Black clients, and what changes still need to be made?
The industry has evolved by highlighting Black estheticians who have carved their paths, but we still need more representation at every level. We need more Black-owned brands, more education tailored to Black skin, and more mainstream recognition of our contributions. The work isn’t done yet.
Do you feel a responsibility to mentor future Black beauty professionals?
Absolutely. I always say, "I often say that we become so others know that they too can become" My journey is meant to inspire others to realize their potential. That means sharing my knowledge, my sources, and my form to uplift others. It’s important to create pipelines for success in this industry so Black professionals don’t just enter it but thrive in it.
