Sierra's journey is without a doubt one of them — a story filled with transformation, resilience, and instances of overcoming the impossible. From growing up in Puerto Rico to the lively streets of Connecticut, Jorge's life journey started to unfold, molding his future in ways he could have never imagined. Fast forward to this day, with over 25 years of barbering expertise, dual licenses, a desire to build up his career, and an unyielding spirit, Jorge has become a real inspiration to all of us

Let’s dive into Jorge’s inspiring story and hear it from his own perspective

How does the story of Jorge A.Sierra starts?

I grew up with my roots in Puerto Rico and my life unfolding in the streets of Connecticut. Let me tell you, it was tough right from the start. We didn't have many choices, faced a lot of hard times, and wished for mentors who were hard to find. The lack of good male role models, especially without a father, was a big problem not just for me, but for many in our community. But hey, we did our best with what we had and kept going.

My freshman year was a big moment, for better or worse. I made some decisions that had a big impact. I said goodbye to school, sure it wasn't my thing, and that led me down a different path. I got mixed up with gangs, drugs, and street life. It's the kind of environment where you either watch from the sidelines or jump right in. I chose the latter, and that's how I ended up getting arrested and facing drug charges at just 17.

Things really took a turn on May 2nd, 1994, during a court visit with my mom. It was supposed to be routine, but it turned into a crazy situation. People I knew from the streets were there, and things got heated. Words turned into a fight, and suddenly, my mom and I, along with some others, were pulled down a flight of stairs and thrown outside. Just when I thought we were in trouble, my mom started shouting about a gun, it was literally seconds, I tried to shield her.  I got hit multiple times, and that was the day I got shot—right in front of the Bristol Police Department Courthouse. It's a day that changed my life forever.

What led you to pursue a career in barbering?

I got into barbering because it felt like a calling from deep within. Life, at that point, had its grip on me, especially after surviving that shooting. The streets were a dead-end, a loop of jail or worse. But I knew I was lucky, a chance to pivot toward better choices and reach higher.

Barbering, in its way, was like throwing me a lifeline. It was an opportunity to reshape myself. I didn't have all the answers and didn't know how to navigate it at all. But the "why" was clear—I craved a better life, something beyond my current circumstances.

Barbering became my escape, a place where I could display my skills and truly make an impact. It wasn't just about money; it was about proving that even through tough times, I could steer things in a different direction.

When did you start your journey in the barber industry?

I jumped into the barbering scene back in 1997. It all began when I drove past the academy one day, I was with a friend, just cruising but I got really curious. I convinced my friend to stop and helped me out, I wheeled into the academy. I really started joking around with the receptionist about enrolling in barbering school, but she wasn't joking at all and brought the instructor out.

The instructor shared all the details on barbering and asked when I wanted to sign up. I was surprised at first, doubting myself considering my wheelchair, but she replied with some words that I’ll never forget and helped me shape my path, "Life is what you make it."

Now, over 25 years later, I still stand by those words. I got into barbering because I saw folks like me, from different backgrounds, rocking it in a pro scene. That realization set things in motion. From that point, I journeyed into the industry, a living example of how determination and belief can shape your path.

You often mention "paralyzed to prosperous" as one of your mottos. Could you share what this means to you?

The motto "paralyzed to prosperous" has truly shaped my journey, both personally and professionally. When people first see my wheelchair, the common reaction is sympathy, but I challenge that sentiment. I explain that even before my physical confinement, I was trapped in what I call a "paralyzed mindset."

This mindset reflects decisions influenced by emotions, limited information, and circumstances that defined me. Interestingly, despite my physical constraints, I've achieved more while seated in this chair than when I could walk. This concept delves into the importance of addressing our mental barriers—the "mental wheelchair" we impose on ourselves. Embracing "paralyzed to prosperous" means shifting from limiting beliefs to seizing opportunities. Our minds can be our greatest asset or hindrance, and this motto continuously reminds me to choose the path of growth and possibility.

What advice would you give to someone who's struggling to find their purpose or passion due to their circumstances?

If life's challenges have you feeling stuck, know this: your emotions are valid. I've been there, bottom-of-the-barrel moments and all. Back when I started my journey 27 years ago, I was just a kid in a wheelchair, dealing with financial struggles and isolation. But my circumstances didn't dictate my worth.

Sure, insecurity and embarrassment can weigh you down. I get it—I've been through the same. But here's the key: "Refuse to lose." It's not about pretending everything's fine, but about using those emotions as fuel for progress. I channeled my insecurity into personal growth, hit the gym, and worked on my finances to gain control.

This mindset shift is the heart of "paralyzed to prosperous." It's not easy, but it's about choosing not to stay down. You have the power within you to rise, to refuse to let challenges define you. Start now—don't wait for greatness, begin the journey, and create your own path from powerless to prosperous.
